Explore the slopes
The local Val Gardena ski area offers plenty of skiing in its own right but from Ortisei you also have access to the enormous Dolomiti Superski region, one of the largest in the world.
From the village centre of Ortisei there are three main access points to the slopes. Take the gondola straight into the Alpe di Siusi area where you’ll find a good selection of blue and red runs to explore. Or if you fancy venturing further afield, the Seceda cable car and Resciesa funicular provide easy access to the neighbouring resorts of Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena. From here, you can access the world-famous Sella Ronda circuit which offers over 500km of linked slopes. It’s a huge ski area and ideal for mile-hungry skiers looking for endless slopes to explore.
Completing the 40km Sella Ronda circuit is a must for all skiers and allows you to take in the stunning scenery of the region. You don’t need to be an expert to do this, so as long as you’re happy skiing a blue run and allow plenty of time, it’s perfectly achievable. There are also so many fantastic mountain restaurants to sample so take your time, and have plenty of stops sampling the local delicacies as you go.
Those looking for high-altitude excitement should seek out the Marmolada glacier. With skiing above 3000m it’s a thrilling descent and well worth the trip.
